Best holiday gifts for kids

The best Christmas gifts for kids should include plenty of books.

Give the gift that ignites their imagination, expands their universe beyond time and place, makes them laugh out loud or even cry, and teaches them something new or else triggers an idea.

It is well established that books help kids develop basic language skills and profoundly expand their vocabularies – way more than watching TV or being on the computer playing games. Books are more interactive than you might suppose; books stimulate the side of the brain that is allowing us to create mental images. Books inspire original thoughts. Books widen our consciousness.

Researchers discovered that brain activity, while listening to stories, was higher in those children who were read to at home more often.

The study also found that when the brain is constantly stimulated, either through reading aloud to kids or encouraging a child to read habitually, slowed down the progress of mental illness.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, about 20 percent of children in the U.S., including preschoolers, suffer from a diagnosable mental illness during a given year. “Children are prone to anxiety, ADHD, and other disorders. Reading keeps their brains active and engaged and can help fend off mental illness”.

So, I think I have provided you with enough reasons to also include books on you holiday shopping list, may it be for your own kids or for someone else’s.
